However, yoga asanas are diverse not just in ways that they benefit the body, but also in ways in which they are performed. While it takes years of practice to perfect yoga asanas, it remains important to do them correctly, even if you are a beginner.

Performing a yoga asana incorrectly can do more harm than good. Not only will you not be able to yield results in terms of benefits, it can also lead to muscle pain and injuries. One popular yoga asana is the Child’s pose, also known as Balasana. It is a beginner level yoga pose. If you perform this pose regularly, watch out for these mistakes people commonly make.

4 common mistakes people make performing the Child’s Pose

Ignoring existing injuries – It is important to be aware of a certain pose is unfit or you, given your current physical health conditions. Some people can experience pain while performing the child’s pose if they have injuries around their ankles, knees or feet. People who have severe pain should not perform the pose, and not ignore the existing injuries.

Do not perform the pose after a meal – The child’s pose requires you to lay a little pressure on your stomach. Therefore, you must not perform this pose right after consuming a meal. You can perform the pose on an empty stomach in the morning, or after 4-5 hours since your last meal.

Position of the forehead – Many people who are at a beginner’s level in yoga, often do not place their forehead on the floor or the mat, because they are not flexible enough to reach, as yet. However, it is recommended that beginners should lift their hip from their ankles, and try to touch their forehead to the floor/mat. This is because the Child’s Pose helps in tugging in the chest, which will not be possible if you do not get the position of the forehead right.

Not performing the pose during menstruation – People have heard that yoga poses should not be performed during menstruation. However, there are some poses that can help, and Balasana is one of them. You should perform the pose during your menstrual cycle as it helps to relax the body.
